Air Jordan XII “Obsidian” Returning in 2027

Although we’re not yet 90 calendar days into 2026, the 2027 sneaker calendar is already heating up. News has emerged that the long-awaited return of the “Obsidian” Air Jordan XII is on the way.

Why It Matters

Among the original colorways of the Air Jordan XII, the “Obsidian” has arguably been the most overlooked. While other OG colorways have enjoyed multiple retro releases—including within the past four years—the “Obsidian” has seen just one additional retail run since its original 1997 debut.

That lone retro arrived in 2012, meaning that by the time the 2027 version hits shelves, fans will have waited 15 years for the shoe’s return.

What to Expect

Although official images have not yet surfaced, the 2027 iteration is expected to stay true to the classic design.

Originally released in 1997, the Air Jordan XII was designed by Tinker Hatfield and drew inspiration from the Japanese Rising Sun flag, which influenced the radiating stitching pattern on the upper. The model was worn by Michael Jordan during the Chicago Bulls’ 1996-97 championship season.

The sneaker should feature an obsidian ribbed leather upper paired with white mudguards on both the lateral and medial sides. On the heel, beneath the Jumpman-branded pull tab, the familiar phrase reads:

“JORDAN QUALITY INSPIRED BY THE GREATEST PLAYER EVER.”

Additional details include an embroidered Jumpman on the tongue, with “TWO3” stitched below. A “JUMPMAN” stamp appears on the plastic tab along the lateral side.

Underneath, the upper sits atop a white and navy midsole, along with a white rubber outsole equipped with navy herringbone traction and finished with a University Blue Jumpman.
